God started the conception of Resurrection Medical Mission back in 2003, in Honduras. I didn’t know what would be birthed by that conception, as we usually don’t, and I didn’t know that this baby would be 20 years in the making. The first pricking of my heart toward mobile medical care started like this. Our team of missionaries worked in Honduras the year before, in 2002. During that time on the ground, we were blessed to work with and get to know a local family, the Velasquez’ (the name has been changed because I can’t remember their name). The following year, 2003, we looked forward to reuniting with that family since we would be ministering in the same village.
When we arrived and were reunited with the Velasquez’, one of the girls, Lucia, was not present. We innocently asked where she was, never fathoming the answer. Diego, the father, tearfully related the events. Let me add here that our sending organization, our church, had decided to collect and send flip-flops with our team on this follow-up trip. In my mind I was thinking, “what good will flimsy flip-flops do?” So Diego told us the agonizing story of Lucia’s suffering. Lucia, while performing her usual daily chores, stepped on a thorn which penetrated her foot. He scooped her up in his arms and frantically ran as hard as he could in an attempt to get her to the closest medical care. The distance was far and Lucia died on the way. Would the outcome have been different if she had a pair of those flimsy flip-flops?
Fast forward 13 years, to 2016. I woke up one morning and the words “mobile medical clinic” came pouring out of my mouth. “What in the world does ‘mobile medical clinic’ mean?” After much prayer and petition, I earnestly started devising a plan to set up mobile medical clinics around Lodwar, Kenya, where I had visited on multiple missions with SERV International. I had no idea how it would actually come together, I had no network to pull from, no resources at my call, but I felt God was in it, so it had to work out. Didn’t it? I made plans, talked to servant after servant and was ready to take the initial step. Then I meet a lady who worked in Kenya. She told me, “we have mobile clinics already, it’s not needed.” What?? So what did I do…I dropped the idea like a mike at the end of an encore. I had some pangs of guilt off and on over the following years. How many people suffered because I didn’t follow the call? Fast forward another 7 years and I am convinced that delivery of this long-awaited baby is close.
In 2022, I again traveled to Kenya and Tanzania on mission with my present church, The Factory, of Woodstock, GA. The birth pains got stronger as this trip stirred the old promptings from The Lord. In May of 2023, Resurrection Medical Mission was birthed by God and a team of 5 board members and 16 team members. Our Motto: Bringing health to His people. Mike Stevenson and myself participated in our first mobile medical clinic, in conjunction with SERV International, to the remote village of Nabuskal, Kenya, in October 2023. So, was I disobedient to God’s timing, to God’s call? For many years I thought I was. But He has revealed to me that HIS timing is once again perfect!
If I had gone forward with MY plans 7 years ago, I would have only known 1 person of the 21 who were involved in the initial launch of Resurrection Medical Mission. And I would have only known 1 of the first 3 ministries that RMM plans to partner with to establish our first 3 mobile medical clinics. Can you imagine how different it would have been, how much more difficult without the support staff called to the ministry and the ministries we have been called to? If I had gone forward with MY plans 20 years ago, or even 7 years ago, the ministry would have looked totally different and I believe it would have been ineffective because it was not in GOD’s time. God is richly blessing this ministry and the relationships it is fostering, with both villagers to whom we bring medical care (and they in turn bring the joy of pure Gospel to us) and those who are making it happen.
